Why Your Hot Tub Needs a Reinforced Base

A filled hot tub with occupants can weigh between 1,500 and 2,500kg — that's the weight of a small car, concentrated on a footprint of just a few square metres. An ordinary patio, paving slabs, or unreinforced concrete simply isn't designed for this kind of sustained load.

Without a properly engineered base, the ground beneath your hot tub can settle unevenly, causing the shell to flex, crack, or distort. This voids the manufacturer's warranty, creates safety hazards, and can lead to costly repairs. Improper drainage is equally dangerous — standing water rots decking, damages the tub's cabinet, and creates slip hazards.

At JustBases, we install reinforced concrete pads specifically engineered for hot tubs. Steel mesh reinforcement is included as standard, along with an integrated drainage fall and high-grade C30/C35 concrete — all backed by our 10-year written guarantee.

Reinforced Concrete Pad

Reinforced Concrete Pad

The Hot Tub Standard

Ideal for: All hot tubs — the recommended base for weight, drainage, and warranty compliance

A steel-mesh-reinforced concrete slab engineered specifically for the sustained load of a filled hot tub and occupants. We excavate to stable ground, lay a compacted MOT Type 1 sub-base, install steel mesh reinforcement as standard, and pour high-grade C30/C35 concrete with an integrated drainage fall. Anti-vibration specification available for pump-heavy models.

Advantages
  • Steel mesh reinforcement included as standard
  • C30/C35 concrete — engineered for 2,500kg+ loads
  • Integrated drainage fall for splashwater
  • Protects hot tub warranty
Considerations
  • Requires 3-7 days curing before bearing full weight
  • Needs vehicle access for concrete delivery
  • Sizing depends on your specific hot tub model
From £595 (8' x 6' — reinforcement extra)
Ground Screw Base

Ground Screw Base

The Access Specialist

Ideal for: Difficult access, sloping gardens, eco-sensitive sites, near protected trees

Galvanised steel screws driven directly into the ground using specialist machinery, with a heavy-duty timber or steel frame bolted on top. No excavation, no concrete, no curing time. With proper frame design, ground screw bases can support the full weight of a filled hot tub and occupants — making them ideal for sites where concrete delivery isn't practical.

Advantages
  • No digging or concrete mess
  • Works on slopes without expensive excavation
  • Tree-root friendly — no TPO damage
  • Fully reversible if you move the tub
Considerations
  • Frame design must be engineered for hot tub weight
  • Higher cost than concrete for standard sites
  • Not suitable for very rocky ground

Hot Tub Base Pricing

Every hot tub base is different, so we provide personalised quotes rather than one-size-fits-all pricing. Your final price depends on:

Your hot tub dimensions and footprint
Tub weight when filled with water
Access to the installation site
Existing ground conditions
Whether drainage channels are needed
Electrical conduit requirements

Concrete bases typically start from £595 for a standard 8' x 6' pad, but most hot tub bases require steel reinforcement (additional cost) and specific sizing based on your tub model. Ground screw bases are priced on application.

Need Advice on Your Hot Tub Base?

"Hot tub bases aren't just bigger paving slabs — they need to be engineered for serious weight. A filled 6-person tub can hit 2,000kg, and that load sits there 24/7, 365 days a year. I'll make sure your base is reinforced properly, drains correctly, and is built to last. Give me a call and tell me about your tub — I'll recommend exactly what you need."

Hot Tub Base FAQs

A properly installed hot tub base must support 1,500–2,500kg — the combined weight of the tub itself, the water (which alone can be 1,000–1,500 litres), and the occupants. A standard unreinforced concrete slab isn't designed for this kind of sustained load. That's why we use steel mesh reinforcement as standard on every hot tub base, with C30 or C35 grade concrete engineered to handle the weight safely over decades.
