Why Your Greenhouse Needs a Proper Base

A greenhouse base must be perfectly level — glass panels won't sit properly on an uneven surface. Even a few millimetres of deviation creates gaps between the frame and glass, causing heat loss, draughts, and water ingress that damages your plants and makes temperature control impossible.

Drainage is equally critical. Water must drain away from your greenhouse, not pool around the base. Standing water encourages root rot, fungal disease, and creates a breeding ground for slugs and pests. A properly installed base ensures rainwater drains freely and naturally.

The base also protects against ground frost heave — seasonal freezing and thawing that shifts soil and can crack greenhouse glass. And most greenhouse manufacturers require a proper base for their warranty to remain valid. At JustBases, we build every greenhouse base to within ±3mm tolerance, with drainage designed in from the start.

Paving Slab Base

Paving Slab Base

The Primary Choice for Greenhouses

Ideal for: Most greenhouses of all sizes — neat, attractive, excellent drainage

High-quality paving slabs laid on a prepared sand and cement bed over compacted hardcore. The most popular greenhouse base for good reason — slabs are naturally permeable, allowing water to drain freely rather than pooling around your plants. We level every slab to within ±3mm, ensuring your glass panels sit perfectly and seal properly. The neat, attractive finish complements any garden.

Advantages
  • Naturally permeable — excellent drainage
  • Level to ±3mm for perfect glass fitting
  • Clean, attractive finish
  • Ready for immediate greenhouse erection
Considerations
  • Requires relatively flat ground
  • Not ideal for very large or heavy commercial greenhouses
  • Ground preparation needed for stability
From £510 (9' x 5')
Poured Concrete Base

Poured Concrete Base

For Larger & Heavier Greenhouses

Ideal for: Large greenhouses, heavy structures, solid-floor requirements

A steel-reinforced concrete slab provides maximum strength for larger or heavier greenhouses. We excavate to stable ground, lay a compacted MOT Type 1 sub-base, and pour high-grade C30 concrete levelled to within ±3mm. Ideal if you want a solid, easy-to-clean floor inside your greenhouse, or for structures over 12 feet long. We can incorporate drainage channels or a slight fall to manage water runoff.

Advantages
  • Maximum load-bearing capacity
  • Solid, easy-to-clean floor surface
  • 50+ year lifespan
  • Drainage channels can be incorporated
Considerations
  • Requires 2-3 days curing before greenhouse placement
  • Less naturally permeable — drainage must be built in
  • Needs vehicle access for concrete delivery
From £595 (8' x 6')
Ground Screw Base

Ground Screw Base

For Slopes & Protected Trees

Ideal for: Sloping sites, near TPO-protected trees, eco-sensitive locations

Galvanised steel screws driven directly into the ground using specialist machinery, with a timber frame bolted on top. No excavation, no concrete, no curing time — your greenhouse base is ready the same day. The only base type suitable for working near TPO-protected trees, and ideal for sloping gardens where traditional bases would require expensive excavation and levelling.

Advantages
  • Works on sloping sites without excavation
  • Tree-root friendly — no damage to TPO trees
  • Same-day installation — no curing time
  • Fully reversible if needed
Considerations
  • Higher cost than slab or concrete for standard sites
  • Requires specialist installation equipment
  • Not suitable for very rocky ground
From £1,650 (8' x 6' with frame)

Craig Phillips

Greenhouse Bases Built to Manufacturer Specs

"Every greenhouse is different — Halls, Elite, Swallow, Rhino — and they all have specific base requirements. I work to your manufacturer's exact specifications so your glass fits perfectly, your doors open and close properly, and your drainage works as it should. A greenhouse base needs more precision than a shed base — we level to within ±3mm and make sure water drains away, not towards your plants. Give me a call and I'll talk you through the options."

Greenhouse Base FAQs

Paving slabs are the most popular choice for greenhouse bases. They provide a perfectly level surface essential for glass panel fitting, they're naturally permeable so water drains freely rather than pooling, and they look neat and attractive. For very large or heavy greenhouses, a poured concrete base offers maximum strength — we can incorporate drainage channels to manage water runoff. Both types come with our 10-year written guarantee.
