Is a timber frame base as strong as concrete?

For most garden applications, yes. A properly constructed timber frame base on concrete or composite posts provides excellent strength for sheds, garden rooms, and summerhouses. Both carry our 10-year guarantee. Concrete is stronger for very heavy loads such as large workshops with heavy machinery, but for the vast majority of garden buildings, a timber frame base performs superbly.

What does 'tanalised' mean?

Tanalised timber is pressure-treated with preservative that is forced deep into the wood under high pressure. This protects against rot, insect attack, and fungal decay — even in permanent ground contact. All the timber we use for frame bases is tanalised to UC4 (Use Class 4) standard, meaning it's rated for direct ground contact and prolonged exposure to the elements.

We set individual posts at different heights to create a perfectly level frame, regardless of the gradient. The frame sits close to the ground at the high end and is raised at the low end. This avoids the need for expensive excavation, retaining walls, or tonnes of imported fill material.

Do I need planning permission for a timber frame base?

In most cases, no. Garden buildings and their bases typically fall under permitted development rights, meaning you don't need planning permission provided the building is single storey with a maximum eaves height of 2.5m, the total area of all outbuildings doesn't exceed 50% of your garden, and it's not forward of the front of the house. The same rules apply regardless of base type. Properties in Conservation Areas or near listed buildings may have additional restrictions.

Can you get materials through narrow access?

Yes — this is one of the biggest advantages of a timber frame base. All materials are carried in individual pieces, so there's no need for concrete lorries, pumps, or large plant machinery to access your garden. If you have a narrow side passage (minimum 700mm), we can get everything through without any difficulty. This makes timber frame the ideal choice for terraced houses and properties with restricted access.

How is the frame levelled?

We use professional laser levels to set each post to the exact required height before the frame is constructed on top. The entire frame is levelled to within ±3mm — the same engineering tolerance we apply to our concrete bases. On sloping ground, this means posts at the low end are taller than those at the high end, creating a perfectly horizontal platform.

Is a timber frame base cheaper than concrete?

On flat ground, the prices are similar — timber frame is slightly higher due to the materials involved. However, on sloping ground, timber frame is often significantly cheaper because we only need to dig individual post holes rather than excavate the full footprint, build retaining walls, and remove large volumes of spoil. The savings on excavation, skip hire, and labour can be substantial on steep sites.
