Why Your Shed Needs a Proper Base

A shed is only as good as the base it sits on. Without a proper foundation, moisture seeps through the floor, timbers rot, the structure shifts out of level, doors jam, and panels warp. Most shed manufacturers will void your warranty if the shed isn't installed on an adequate base.

At JustBases, shed bases are one of our most popular installations. We offer four types of shed base — poured concrete, raised timber frame, paving slabs, and ground screws — each suited to different garden conditions, budgets, and shed sizes. Every base we install is levelled to engineering tolerances (±3mm) and backed by our 10-year written guarantee.

Poured Concrete

Poured Concrete

The Gold Standard

Ideal for: Heavy workshops, large sheds, garden storage buildings

A steel-reinforced concrete slab provides maximum strength and longevity. We excavate to stable ground, lay a compacted MOT Type 1 sub-base, and pour high-grade C30 concrete levelled to within ±3mm. This is the base most shed manufacturers recommend for structures over 10x8.

Advantages
  • Maximum load-bearing capacity
  • 50+ year lifespan
  • Protects shed warranty
  • Resists ground movement
Considerations
  • Requires 2-3 days curing before shed placement
  • Needs vehicle access for concrete delivery
  • Not ideal for tree root areas
From £595 (8' x 6')
Raised Timber Frame

Raised Timber Frame

The Slope Specialist

Ideal for: Sloping gardens, difficult access, uneven ground

Pressure-treated timber bearers mounted on concrete or composite posts, creating a perfectly level platform without major excavation. We dig individual post holes rather than the full footprint — saving labour, skip costs, and garden disruption. Ideal for the many sloping gardens across Dorset and Hampshire.

Advantages
  • Works on slopes without expensive excavation
  • Materials carried in pieces — great for tight access
  • Improved ventilation under the shed
  • Ready for immediate use — no curing time
Considerations
  • Not suitable for very heavy machinery loads
  • Timber requires ground-contact treatment (tanalised)
  • Posts need to reach stable ground
From £700 (8' x 6')
Paving Slab Base

Paving Slab Base

The Neat & Affordable Option

Ideal for: Smaller sheds, bike stores, bin stores, tool sheds

High-quality paving slabs laid on a prepared sand and cement bed over compacted hardcore. Provides a neat, durable, and permeable platform that allows rainwater to drain naturally. The most affordable option for compact garden sheds.

Advantages
  • Most affordable base type
  • Permeable — good drainage
  • Clean, attractive finish
  • Ready for immediate use
Considerations
  • Best for lighter structures under 10x8
  • Not suitable for exposed, windy sites
  • Requires relatively flat ground
From £510 (9' x 5')
Ground Screw Base

Ground Screw Base

The Zero-Waste Solution

Ideal for: Tight access, tree root areas, eco-sensitive sites, same-day installation

Galvanised steel screws driven directly into the ground using specialist machinery, with a timber frame bolted on top. No excavation, no concrete, no curing time — your shed can go on the same day. The only base type suitable for working near TPO-protected trees.

Advantages
  • No digging or concrete mess
  • Shed installed same day
  • Tree-root friendly — no damage to TPO trees
  • Fully reversible — remove screws to restore lawn
Considerations
  • Higher cost than concrete for standard sites
  • Requires specialist installation equipment
  • Not suitable for very rocky ground
From £1,180 (8' x 6' screws only)

Shed Base FAQs

Yes — a proper base is essential. Placing a shed directly on soil or grass leads to moisture damage, rotting floor timbers, an unlevel structure that causes doors to jam and panels to warp, and in most cases voids the manufacturer's warranty. A professionally installed base prevents all of these problems and typically adds decades to your shed's lifespan. Even small 6x4 sheds benefit from a proper base.
