Our shed base prices start from £510 for a 9x5 paving slab base, £595 for an 8x6 concrete base, £700 for an 8x6 timber frame, and £1,650 for an 8x6 ground screw base with timber frame. How long does it take to install a shed base?

Accepted Answer

Most shed bases are completed in a single day. Ground screw bases can often be finished in half a day — your shed can be placed the same afternoon. Timber frame and paving slab bases are also ready for immediate use. Poured concrete bases take one day to install but require 2-3 days of curing before the shed can be placed on top. For larger bases (over 10x8) or challenging sites, installation may extend to two days.

Can you install a shed base on sloping ground?

Absolutely — this is one of our specialities. For sloping gardens, we typically recommend a timber frame base on posts or ground screws with a frame. Both create a perfectly level platform without expensive excavation or retaining walls. The frame sits close to the ground at the high end and is raised at the low end. For very steep slopes, we can combine ground screws with a timber frame for the strongest result.

What size base do I need for my shed?

Your base should be exactly the same size as the shed floor, or up to 50mm larger on each side for a tolerance margin. Shed manufacturers specify the base dimensions in their installation guides — we work to these exact specifications. Common shed sizes we install bases for include 6x4, 8x6, 10x8, 12x8, 12x10, 14x10, 16x10, 18x10, and 20x10 feet. We also build bespoke sizes for custom sheds.

Is a concrete base better than a timber frame base?

Both are excellent options — the best choice depends on your situation. Concrete is stronger and better for very heavy loads, but requires curing time and vehicle access for delivery. Timber frames are faster to install, work brilliantly on slopes, and the materials can be carried through narrow access points. Both come with our 10-year written guarantee. For most standard garden sheds, either option will perform superbly.

Do I need planning permission for a shed base?

Accepted Answer

In most cases, no. Garden sheds and their bases typically fall under permitted development rights, meaning you don't need planning permission provided the building is single storey with a maximum eaves height of 2.5m, the total area of all outbuildings doesn't exceed 50% of your garden, and it's not forward of the front of the house. Properties in Conservation Areas or near listed buildings may have additional restrictions. We recommend checking with your local planning authority if unsure.

Can you work near tree roots and TPO-protected trees?

Yes. Ground screw bases are specifically designed for working near protected trees — they cause minimal soil disturbance and don't require excavation that could damage root systems. This is often the only base type permitted within a tree's Root Protection Area.
