Log Cabin Bases & Foundations

A log cabin base must support its floor bearers accurately and keep the lowest wall timbers away from persistent moisture.

What the foundation needs to do

Interlocking log walls are particularly dependent on a level, square starting point. A small error at foundation level can become a visible problem at doors, windows and roof lines as the cabin is assembled.

We prepare the foundation around the actual floor-bearer diagram, not a guessed nominal cabin size. The appropriate system may be a concrete slab, a raised frame on ground screws or another supplier-approved arrangement.

Options, assessed properly

Suitable foundation methods

The methods below are possibilities to assess—not interchangeable specifications. We match the foundation to the product, loads, support points, ground and access.

Ground screws

Ground screws and support frame

Ground screws with a designed support frame can follow the cabin bearer layout and raise timber away from damp ground. The ground and loads determine the final specification.

Often worth considering for: Cabins on slopes, landscaped sites and projects where a dry construction method is helpful

Installed screws from £1,180 for 8' × 6' (48 ft² / 4.46 m²); frame quoted separately

Concrete

Concrete foundation

A reinforced or suitably specified concrete base provides a rigid full-area platform when the manufacturer requires one.

Often worth considering for: Large cabins, concentrated internal loads and designs intended for slab support

From £695 for 8' × 6' (48 ft² / 4.46 m²)

Timber frame

Raised timber frame

A raised treated frame can accommodate changing levels, provided its supports and member sizes follow the cabin requirements.

Often worth considering for: Lighter cabins and accessible sites where underfloor ventilation is desirable

From £840 for 8' × 6' (48 ft² / 4.46 m²)

Dimensions, approvals and responsibilities

Cabin suppliers often distinguish between external wall size, roof size and required base size. The installation document or bearer plan is the safest setting-out reference.

Intended use matters. Sleeping accommodation, plumbing, commercial use or a position near a boundary can change the planning or building-control questions beyond the base itself.

JustBases quotes the agreed foundation and groundwork. Product installation, specialist connections, commissioning and third-party design remain outside our scope unless the written quotation expressly includes them.
