Small hen houses are often placed straight on soil, where floor timbers remain damp and predators can work at the edges. A prepared base makes cleaning easier and can be coordinated with an anti-dig run perimeter.

Registering kept birds is now widely required in Great Britain, including small flocks. Check current APHA rules as well as local planning or covenant issues.
Do not rely on ordinary chicken wire as the complete predator solution; the coop supplier or animal-welfare adviser should define the enclosure security.
