What the foundation needs to do

Outdoor saunas range from compact barrel designs on timber cradles to insulated cabins with a complete floor. Their support requirements are therefore model-specific rather than interchangeable.

We install a level foundation to the sauna footprint and coordinate the entrance, ventilation, drainage and electrical route with the supplier's instructions.

Options, assessed properly

Suitable foundation methods

The methods below are possibilities to assess—not interchangeable specifications. We match the foundation to the product, loads, support points, ground and access.

Paving slabs

Paving-slab base

A sound, level slabbed area can suit many barrel and compact cabin saunas when it supports every cradle or bearer.

Often worth considering for: Smaller saunas on reasonably level garden sites

From £620 for 9' × 5' (45 ft² / 4.18 m²)

Concrete

Concrete foundation

A concrete pad provides full-area support and a durable surface for larger cabins or supplier specifications requiring a slab.

Often worth considering for: Insulated sauna rooms and installations integrated with a terrace

From £695 for 8' × 6' (48 ft² / 4.46 m²)

Ground screws

Ground screws and support frame

Screws and a designed frame can create a raised, ventilated platform without a full wet-poured base where the sauna supplier accepts it.

Often worth considering for: Sloping gardens and framed sauna cabins

Installed screws from £1,180 for 8' × 6' (48 ft² / 4.46 m²); frame quoted separately

Timber frame

Raised timber frame

A treated structural frame may follow the sauna bearer plan while lifting the floor above changing ground levels.

Often worth considering for: Lightweight cabins with a compatible floor design

From £840 for 8' × 6' (48 ft² / 4.46 m²)

Dimensions, approvals and responsibilities

Provide the model-specific base diagram, especially for barrel saunas where cradle positions matter. The overall barrel length does not define every support line.

Heater installation, ventilation, clearances and electrics remain subject to their own supplier and competent-person requirements.

JustBases quotes the agreed foundation and groundwork. Product installation, specialist connections, commissioning and third-party design remain outside our scope unless the written quotation expressly includes them.

Outdoor Sauna Bases FAQs

A level concrete or properly laid paved base is common, although an approved framed foundation may also work. Every barrel cradle must be supported as instructed.
