What the foundation needs to do

A pergola usually stands on a small number of posts, so each foundation carries a meaningful share of the structure. Adjustable louvres, blinds and glazed screens can add weight and wind exposure beyond that of a simple timber frame.

We set out the post positions from the manufacturer's base plan and install the agreed concrete or ground-screw supports. Any new patio can then be detailed around the structural fixings rather than being asked to act as the footing itself.

Options, assessed properly

Suitable foundation methods

The methods below are possibilities to assess—not interchangeable specifications. We match the foundation to the product, loads, support points, ground and access.

Concrete

Concrete foundation

Individual reinforced footings or an engineered slab can receive base plates and anchors at the required centres.

Often worth considering for: Aluminium and louvred pergolas with manufacturer-defined anchor details

Ground screws

Ground screws and support frame

Ground screws with suitable heads can provide defined support points for some timber or lightweight pergola systems, subject to wind design and ground conditions.

Often worth considering for: Dry-built pergolas, sloping gardens and timber frames with compatible connections

Paving slabs

Paving-slab base

Paving is a useful surrounding finish, but structural posts normally need dedicated support beneath it rather than fixings into a loose slab.

Often worth considering for: Pergolas integrated into a new seating terrace

A written price for the approved detail

Specialist foundations are quoted from the actual product, support plan and site information. No VAT is added to the guide prices shown.

Dimensions, approvals and responsibilities

Please provide the manufacturer's foundation drawing, including bolt positions and any minimum concrete dimensions. The frame's outside size is not always the same as the footing centres.

Retractable roofs, fixed louvres and side screens can change both planning considerations and wind loads. Mention intended accessories even if they will be added later.

JustBases quotes the agreed foundation and groundwork. Product installation, specialist connections, commissioning and third-party design remain outside our scope unless the written quotation expressly includes them.

"Craig and his team were very professional throughout the job. They worked tirelessly and extremely hard. The job involved digging up a thick reinforced concrete base. Then creating a whole new base with precision engineering in preparation to accept a new building on top. The result was an excellent job all round."
