What the foundation needs to do

An outdoor sculpture may be light but catch strong wind, or be compact and extraordinarily heavy. Public access adds accidental and deliberate contact loads that the engineer must consider.

We install the approved reinforced foundation, plinth and cast-in anchor assembly from coordinated artist, fabricator and structural drawings.

Options, assessed properly

Suitable foundation methods

The methods below are possibilities to assess—not interchangeable specifications. We match the foundation to the product, loads, support points, ground and access.

Concrete

Concrete foundation

A reinforced footing and plinth can be cast around the engineer's anchor cage and finished to the architect's public-realm detail.

Often worth considering for: Permanent sculptures, statues and commissioned plinths

Ground screws

Ground screws and support frame

Engineered screws may support a temporary or lightweight artwork frame when the structural designer approves overturning and connection details.

Often worth considering for: Selected temporary installations requiring reversible support

A written price for the approved detail

Specialist foundations are quoted from the actual product, support plan and site information. No VAT is added to the guide prices shown.

Dimensions, approvals and responsibilities

Responsibility boundaries between artist, fabricator, sculpture engineer, foundation engineer and installer should be written down before fabrication.

Public art commonly needs planning, landowner and public-liability approvals; those should use the same final artwork dimensions as the foundation design.

JustBases quotes the agreed foundation and groundwork. Product installation, specialist connections, commissioning and third-party design remain outside our scope unless the written quotation expressly includes them.

"Craig and his team were very professional throughout the job. They worked tirelessly and extremely hard. The job involved digging up a thick reinforced concrete base. Then creating a whole new base with precision engineering in preparation to accept a new building on top. The result was an excellent job all round."
