The best foundation for a sculpture is the engineered support that suits the artwork’s geometry, materials, site and intended public access. A compact concrete footing is a common solution for permanent pieces. Larger or more demanding works may need deeper foundations. An approved screw-supported or removable system can be attractive for suitable artworks, especially where reducing excavation and allowing future relocation are part of the brief.
The artwork’s weight alone is not enough to choose its base. A light sculpture with a broad exposed shape can behave very differently from a low stone piece. Start with the artwork’s behaviour
A sculpture has a centre of gravity, contact points and surfaces exposed to wind. Some works have moving elements, while others may be touched, leaned on or approached closely by visitors. The designer should establish the relevant loads and performance requirements.
Arup’s account of the Angel of the North demonstrates how structural and foundation design can preserve an artist’s intended form while responding to an exposed location. It is a landmark-scale example, not a foundation template for a garden sculpture. The principle is that the hidden support and visible artwork should be designed together.
Ask the fabricator for the fixing interface early. A finished sculpture with an undefined base connection can make the foundation unnecessarily difficult. The anchor pattern, bearing plate and any grout detail should be coordinated before fabrication and groundwork become fixed.
For smaller projects, that process can still be straightforward. Begin with the artwork dimensions, material, proposed location and a sketch or photograph. The specialist team can identify the design information needed without expecting the owner to calculate it.

Concrete: flexible support for permanent pieces
A concrete foundation can provide a defined anchoring point and distribute the artwork’s loads into the ground. It can remain hidden below the landscape or form part of a visible plinth, depending on the design.
The main advantage is flexibility. The foundation can be shaped around the approved load and connection arrangement, with anchor cages, pockets or other details coordinated with the fabricator.
The visible finish needs its own decision. A structural footing beneath soil is different from an exposed architectural plinth. If the concrete is part of the artwork’s presentation, agree finish, edges and tolerances before construction rather than assuming ordinary foundation workmanship produces the intended appearance.
The disadvantages include excavation, material use and the permanence of the result. A future relocation may leave a substantial buried structure to deal with. If removal is likely, discuss that at the design stage instead of treating it as a distant problem.
Concrete also needs time before it accepts the sculpture and anchors. Coordinate the fabricator’s delivery and lifting operation with the foundation’s readiness, not merely with the date the surface is finished.
When deeper support may be required
Some artworks cannot be supported appropriately by a shallow footing alone. Weak or variable ground, demanding wind loads or a slender exposed form may lead the engineer to a deeper foundation arrangement.
That is a design decision based on the site and artwork. It should not be inferred from the height of a different sculpture or a photograph of an installation elsewhere.
The benefit is access to a support arrangement that meets the project’s requirements where a simple surface solution does not. The trade-offs can include specialist equipment, greater design coordination and constraints on access or nearby services.
The public-facing artwork may remain visually light while its foundation is substantial. That is not necessarily overbuilding; it may be what allows the form to work safely. Ask the engineer to explain the chosen approach in practical terms, then compare construction prices for that approved design.
If ground information is limited, identify the necessary investigation before finalising the foundation. Guessing and then revising the design during installation can cause more disruption than a planned assessment.
Ground screws and removable support systems
We favour ground screw foundations where they provide a suitable complete solution with less concrete and excavation. For selected sculptures, screws connected through an engineered steel interface may offer an attractive way to support the work while keeping future removal more manageable.
The system needs to address the artwork’s actual loads, including sideways forces and overturning where relevant. The screws, connecting frame and artwork connection should be designed together. A group of supports capable of carrying the vertical weight is not automatically adequate for a tall exposed piece.
Ground conditions and buried services may constrain positions. The installation should also consider roots or sensitive landscaping where these are present, without claiming that screws guarantee no disturbance or no root damage.
Removal needs a realistic plan. Screws may be recoverable in suitable circumstances, but access, connections and the condition of components affect what can actually be reused. Include the intended process in the design brief if reversibility is important.
Steel manufacture, coating, transport and installation belong in the environmental comparison. A smaller concrete footprint may be beneficial, but the complete project should be assessed rather than declaring every screw-supported artwork automatically the greenest option.
Ballasted bases for temporary work
A designed ballasted support may suit some temporary installations where ground penetration is restricted. It can allow an artwork to be removed without leaving a buried footing.
The obvious trade-off is the ballast itself. It occupies space, must be delivered and may need lifting equipment. Its ability to resist sliding or overturning depends on the whole design and supporting surface.
Loose paving slabs or decorative blocks should not be assembled into a ballast base without engineering approval. A base can look heavy while still being unsuitable for the artwork’s shape or the location’s exposure.
Public access makes the visible edges and footprint important. The ballast should not create an unnecessary trip hazard or obstruct the intended route around the work. The artist, site manager and engineer should agree how structural support and visitor experience fit together.
Temporary does not mean unplanned. Establish the installation period, inspection responsibility and removal arrangements. A changing exhibition programme can benefit from a reusable approved support system, but every new artwork still needs compatibility checks.
Existing slabs, paving and plinths
Reusing an adequate existing foundation can avoid new material and disturbance. It is worth exploring where a previous sculpture or structure occupied the site.
The engineer should assess condition, geometry, ground support and the proposed anchors. An existing plinth may look suitable yet lack the capacity or connection arrangement the new work needs. Old holes should not simply be enlarged until the new plate fits.
Paving-slab construction can create an attractive surrounding surface, but ordinary paving is not automatically a structural sculpture foundation. The artwork may need a separate footing below it, with the paving detailed around the support.
Similarly, a timber-frame base may be useful for a compatible platform or exhibition setting, but should not be assumed suitable beneath a permanent heavy or exposed sculpture. The structural designer should approve its role and connections.
Keeping the walking surface separate from the structural support can make future maintenance easier. It also avoids using a large structural slab merely to achieve the desired landscape finish.
Anchors and fabrication: where accuracy matters
The artwork and foundation often come from different teams, so their connection needs a clear owner. Agree the current bolt template, orientation, finished level and any grout or levelling arrangement before concrete or steel is fabricated.
A small setting-out error can become a major problem when an artwork arrives on a crane. Build in a check while the foundation is still accessible and before the lifting date is fixed.
Do not modify an anchor plate or drill extra holes in the artwork without the designer’s acceptance. Such changes can affect the intended load path and the artist’s finish.
Hidden connections also need future access or an agreed inspection strategy. A beautifully concealed detail may be difficult to maintain if it is permanently buried beneath landscaping. Discuss how the condition of fixings will be checked over time.
Arup’s Statue of Unity account describes coordinating structural support with fabrication and assembly to preserve the sculptor’s form. The scale is exceptional, but the useful lesson for a smaller commission is practical: the artist, fabricator and foundation designer should agree their interfaces before the separate components are made.
Water, materials and long-term appearance
The connection between sculpture and base should manage water as the designer intends. Trapped water around a plate, unsuitable material combinations or inaccessible joints can create maintenance problems.
Ask the fabricator to coordinate corrosion protection and drainage details with the foundation designer. The groundworker should follow that interface rather than make assumptions about sealing, packing or coating.
The surrounding ground should not gradually bury the base or direct runoff into the connection. Planting, mulch and paving levels should be recorded in the landscape detail so later maintenance does not unintentionally alter them.
For illuminated or interactive artwork, plan cable ducts and access points before construction. Electrical equipment and controls may need separate supports, and cables should not compromise the structural connection or create an unplanned maintenance route.
Public access and ongoing responsibility
Consider how people will actually encounter the work. The site manager and designer should assess intended interaction, foreseeable contact and the surrounding routes. A piece viewed from a distance differs from one placed where visitors gather closely.
The foundation should support that brief without adding unnecessary obstacles. Edges, covers, steps and protective measures need to be coordinated with the landscape and accessibility design.
Agree who inspects the installation and what happens if damage or movement is observed. Keep drawings, component information and installation records together. Future owners or maintenance teams should not have to reconstruct the hidden design from photographs.
An artwork’s visual life can be long, but coatings, connections and surrounding ground may change. A foundation that remains inspectable and maintainable is part of a durable installation, not merely an invisible construction cost.
Getting a meaningful quotation
Ask for the quotation to refer to the approved artwork and foundation drawings. It should identify preparation, excavation, spoil, concrete or screws, steel interfaces, anchors, ducts and reinstatement.
Clarify who supplies templates, checks setting out, provides grout and coordinates the lift. The structural designer, artist, fabricator and groundworker should understand where each responsibility begins and ends.
