For most people, a shed base has one simple purpose: let the new shed go up properly and stay useful without becoming another garden problem. You want doors that open, a floor that supports what you store and lower timbers that are not sitting in persistent damp. Several foundation types can achieve that, but they suit different buildings and sites.
For a compatible timber shed, ground screws with a properly designed frame are often our first option to investigate. Paving can be excellent value for a small conventional shed on suitable ground, while concrete is often appropriate for heavier buildings or demanding workshop use. The shed material does not tell the whole story
A timber shed usually has a floor and bearers that need support in particular places. Some metal or composite sheds have different floor arrangements, while a sectional concrete shed may require a supplier-specified slab. Follow the actual product instructions rather than assuming every shed uses the same base.
Contents matter as well. A lawnmower and a few hand tools are one use; dense shelving, a large collection of stored materials or heavy machinery are another. The floor can become the limiting part of the system even when the foundations themselves are substantial.

Ground screws: a practical modern starting point
Ground screw bases support an approved timber or steel frame using installed steel foundations. The frame then provides the support the shed floor needs. This is a complete system, not simply a handful of screws beneath the corners.
For a sloping garden, the advantage is that the floor can remain level while the ground changes beneath it. That may avoid creating a broad excavated platform or importing a large amount of fill.
For restricted access, reducing spoil and bulky material movements can be equally valuable. A shed at the end of a long narrow path may make conventional concrete preparation more labour-intensive than the small floor area suggests.
The screw supports do not need a concrete curing period. Once the agreed foundations and frame are completed and ready, the shed installation can follow according to the programme. Site assessment, buried obstructions and frame supply still need allowing for, so this should not become a universal same-day promise.
Where screws need a closer assessment
Old rubble, buried concrete, services and variable ground can affect the installation. The support layout must also match the shed and its contents. An online screw count based only on length and width cannot settle those issues.
The frame raises the finished floor. That can help separate timber from damp ground, but may introduce a step. If you wheel a mower, bicycle or heavy toolbox into the shed, a suitable threshold or ramp should be part of the discussion.
Compare complete prices. Screws without a frame, a frame without floor support and a fully ready base are different deliverables. The written quote should explain exactly what the shed supplier will receive.
Concrete: useful where continuous support is wanted
A concrete shed base provides a continuous supporting surface. It is often appropriate for a heavier building, a shed whose supplier requires a slab or a workshop use that needs a designed solid floor.
Concrete can be durable and useful beyond the life of one shed. If you expect to replace the building with a similar model later, a sound compatible slab may remain valuable. Its permanence can therefore be a benefit.
The disadvantages are the excavation, spoil removal, deliveries and curing. On a simple accessible site those may be manageable; behind a narrow gate they can account for a large part of the job. The required specification should reflect the ground, building and use rather than a generic internet thickness.
Concrete does not automatically solve moisture. The base dimensions, wall interface, damp-proofing where required and surrounding levels need to work together. A broad exposed ledge can direct rain towards the shed if detailed badly, even though the slab itself is structurally sound.
Paving slabs: often good value for a modest shed
A properly prepared paving slab base can be a sensible choice for a smaller, lighter shed when the supplier accepts it. Slabs are modular and can be carried into a garden without arranging a single large pour.
The key phrase is properly prepared. Placing slabs directly on grass or soft topsoil can leave them moving independently. Suitable ground preparation, sub-base and bedding provide the stability that the visible slabs rely on.
The arrangement must support the shed bearers as intended. A few level slabs beneath the corners do not establish that the floor is supported across its required lines. Likewise, textured decorative paving may not create the consistent bearing surface the shed needs.
Paving’s flexibility can be helpful if the garden changes, but uneven settlement can become awkward to repair beneath a completed shed. It is worth getting the concealed work right before the building covers it.
Timber bases: understand what is underneath
A timber frame base can create a raised, ventilated platform. It may be supported by screws, designed pads or another approved arrangement. Timber frames and ground screws are therefore often complementary parts of one solution.
Do not confuse a structural frame with decorative decking. An existing deck may have been built for people and garden furniture, with no consideration of the shed’s permanent loads or bearer positions. Its joists, connections and foundations need assessing before reuse.
Timber durability depends on more than a treatment label. The design should manage moisture, use appropriate materials and allow inspection. Soil, mulch and leaves should not be piled against the frame to hide the edge.
A perimeter skirt can create a neat finish, but it should preserve the ventilation and access required by the system. Plan the final landscaping around the base’s needs rather than enclosing it first and wondering later how to reach it.
Plastic grids and gravel systems
Interlocking plastic grids can be suitable for certain lightweight sheds where the grid and shed manufacturers accept the arrangement. Manufacturer IBRAN’s building-base information describes a grid system that forms part of a prepared foundation rather than replacing preparation altogether.
The attraction is lightweight components and a potentially permeable construction. These can be useful where moving heavy slabs is awkward or where a removable surface is desirable.
The limitations are ground suitability, support compatibility and the complete build-up. A grid does not make soft ground stable simply by covering it. Nor does gravel automatically provide the consistent bearing needed by every shed floor.

Reusing an existing base may be the best saving
If you are replacing an old shed, do not assume its base must be removed. A sound foundation of the right dimensions and construction can sometimes remain in use.
Check level, condition, drainage and the new shed’s support requirements. The old building may have hidden cracks or settlement, and a larger replacement may put loads beyond the supported area. A base extension also needs deliberate design rather than a narrow strip added without considering movement.
Reusing suitable material can save money, waste and disruption. That is an important part of the environmental comparison: replacing a perfectly adequate base with a new system is not automatically an improvement because the new material has a greener marketing description.
Drainage, doors and everyday access
The shed needs the level support specified by its supplier, while the surrounding garden needs to manage water. Keep those objectives distinct. Tilting the shed to drain a path is not a sensible compromise.
Look at roof runoff, nearby beds and low ground behind the building. Leave room to inspect and maintain the shed, rather than squeezing it so tightly against a fence that nobody can reach the lower wall.
At the doorway, think about what you move in and out. A base that is easy to step onto may still be awkward for wheeled equipment. The agreed finished height and approach should make ordinary use straightforward, not become another project after the shed is assembled.
Which option is the most sustainable?

The foundation should be proportionate to the shed and its use. An oversized slab for a small tool store can be unnecessary, but an inadequate low-material base that needs replacing is not good value either.
