For a feed store handling pallets, heavy bins or regular trolley traffic, a properly designed concrete base is often the most practical option. For a smaller timber store holding bagged feed by hand, ground screws and an approved structural floor can be a good alternative with less concrete and excavation. A bulk silo is a separate engineered foundation project.
The best choice depends on the feed at its heaviest and the way it enters the store. An empty timber building may be light; several concentrated stacks or a pallet truck can place very different demands on its floor.

Describe the contents before choosing the floor
List the types of feed, the largest delivery and how much stock you expect to hold at once. Include storage bins, shelving, pallets and the equipment used to move them.
The maximum load matters more than the average Tuesday. A floor may cope with a few bags but need a different design when a delivery is stacked in one corner. Pallet-truck wheels and rack feet concentrate loads into small areas.
Keep bagged-feed rooms separate in your thinking from bulk storage or silos. A silo’s legs, anchorage and filled load require the manufacturer’s foundation design. A shed-base rule cannot be applied to that equipment.
Dry storage also needs an appropriate building. Government guidance on feed storage discusses measures to reduce contamination and disease risks. Concrete: useful when the store works hard
A concrete base can provide both the store’s support and a durable substrate for its working floor. It can suit wheeled handling and heavy storage when the slab is designed for those demands.
The continuous surface is useful for sweeping and seeing spills. There are fewer joints than with paving, and the doorway can be coordinated with a delivery apron so bags and bins move through without an abrupt lip.
The floor still needs moisture protection and an appropriate finish. A slab placed at the same level as a yard that drains towards it can bring water into the store. Its perimeter, wall base and door threshold should work together to keep the interior dry.
Do not assume that a thicker-looking slab is automatically adequate for a forklift or stacked pallets. Vehicle and storage loads should be stated to the designer. Reinforcement, joints and support depend on the actual requirements and ground.
Concrete has disadvantages: excavation, spoil, delivery access and curing. Floor joints and finishes may also influence how easily small wheels move. Those details should be resolved before the building is installed, not left to the operator to work around.
Where concrete genuinely suits the handling system, it can be a durable long-term choice. The aim is an appropriately specified floor, rather than the largest possible slab.
Ground screws for smaller raised feed rooms
Ground-screw foundations can support a timber store through a designed frame. Where feed is carried in manageable bags and the building has an approved floor, this may avoid a continuous concrete base.
The benefits include reduced excavation and separation between the floor structure and wet ground. On an uneven site or beyond restricted access, a raised system can simplify the installation compared with moving large quantities of concrete and spoil.
However, the floor must be specified for storage. A light garden-shed floor is not automatically adequate simply because people can walk on it. Give the designer the intended number and arrangement of feed bags, bins and racks.
A timber frame base distributes those loads to the screws. Bearer and joist positions should follow the building and storage plan, including concentrated loads near walls or doorways.
The underside needs protection and inspection access. Feed should not fall into a hidden void, and service penetrations or ventilation openings should be detailed appropriately. A raised floor can help with moisture separation while still creating a pest-management challenge if its edges are neglected.
Screws do not eliminate the need for a firm delivery route. If the store is raised, the entrance arrangement must suit the way bags or trolleys are moved. Include that approach in the comparison.
Pads, paving and other possible supports
Concrete pads can carry a raised frame where the ground and building suit the arrangement. They use discrete support points rather than a full slab, but each point needs proper bearing and a secure connection above it.
Loose blocks or improvised stacks are not equivalent. Uneven settlement can distort the store, affect doors and create gaps that are difficult to seal. A feed room benefits from a stable shell because its security and cleanliness depend on details remaining aligned.
A paving slab base may suit a small approved store on an existing sound area. Its limitations become more significant with pallet trucks, heavy bins and concentrated legs. Joints can catch small wheels or collect spilled feed, and individual slabs may move.
Paving can still be valuable for the approach even if a different foundation carries the room. Reusing adequate surfacing is sensible when its function matches its construction.
Bare soil or loose stone should not be treated as a default clean storage floor for bagged feed. Moisture, spilled material and pest inspection become harder to manage. A low initial cost can be outweighed by an inconvenient routine and damaged stock.
Keep feed dry from delivery to use
The foundation is part of a chain: delivery area, doorway, floor, storage arrangement and roof. A dry floor is less useful if rain enters at the threshold or sacks are unloaded into a puddle outside.
Plan a firm approach and somewhere to handle deliveries without blocking the doorway. Make the transition suitable for the actual trolley or pallet-handling equipment. Small hard wheels are particularly sensitive to lips and rough joints.
The FAO’s feed-storage guidance recommends protecting stores from rain and surface water, keeping the store clean and arranging stock so older material remains accessible. Those principles have a direct layout consequence: allow working and inspection space when sizing the base. The floor area occupied by feed is not the whole room you need.
Do not assume ventilation means leaving uncontrolled gaps at the bottom of the building. The supplier should coordinate airflow with weather and pest protection. Ground-screw and concrete systems both need that complete building detail.
A cleanable perimeter is worth more than hidden extra space
Feed spills often collect at the edges: beneath shelving, behind bins and beside the door. Design those areas so they can be reached with ordinary cleaning equipment.

If the store is raised, consider how the underside will be checked. If it is on concrete, pay attention to cracks, wall junctions and service entries. Neither material removes the need to maintain the building envelope.
Keep the area immediately around the store manageable. Dense clutter against the walls can prevent inspection regardless of how good the base is. A modest clear perimeter may be more useful than squeezing the building into the largest possible footprint.
Where the room also stores chemicals or equipment, discuss appropriate separation with the relevant supplier or adviser. Do not assume a larger feed shed makes every storage combination suitable.
Plan for the handling equipment you will actually use
If deliveries arrive on pallets, decide whether pallets remain outside, enter by pallet truck or are moved by another machine. The answer affects the apron, threshold and floor loading.
A ramp to a raised store may be practical for a hand trolley but unsuitable for the planned loaded equipment. Its width, gradient and load capacity need proper consideration. Do not leave it as a loose board added after installation.
Storage racks create their own concentrated loads and sometimes require anchorage. Give their details to the building and foundation designer before the floor is finalised. Changing to taller storage later may need a fresh check.
For a bulk feed bin or silo, obtain the equipment manufacturer’s foundation and anchor schedule. Filled weight, wind and connection details matter. The existence of a nearby concrete yard does not prove it can receive the equipment safely.
These are practical specification choices, not a requirement for you to arrive with engineering calculations. A clear description of your intended operation gives the professionals the information they need.
Cost and the more sustainable option
Compare the usable store base, including frame where relevant, floor substrate, approach, removal work and any agreed drainage or ducts. A cheap support-only quote may omit the most expensive part of making deliveries workable.
